Blondes and sun exposure

Long sun exposure can be rough on your blonde hair, exposing unwelcome brassiness, dryness, and damage. That, however, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the summer sun. Here are some of my “to go” tips on how to maintain beautiful hair color all summer long and beyond!

1- Wear a hat and hair products that contain UV protection. This will avoid having your hair fried by the sun’s UV rays. I love a big floppy hat and as for products, I am obsessed with Coola hair & scalp FPS mist and L’Oréal 10 in 1 spray.

2- Wear a swim cap before going into the ocean or the pool. This will protect against chlorine or saltwater, which can cause brittleness, brassy hues, and green hair (thanks to chlorine!).

3- Not a fan of a cap, me neither! A good hair mask will coat your tresses before jumping in the water. It can also be super effective. I always recommend L’Oréal Blondifier or Mithic Oil masks. They are super hydrating and smell delicious.

4- Purple conditioner instead of Purple Shampoo! This will help you get through the summer mostly unharmed by brassiness. It will neutralize unwanted brassy yellow tones and simultaneously hydrate your hair. However please do not overuse it! Too much purple pigment can turn your bright blonde hair dull and lifeless. I am especially fond of the Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel conditioner.

5- Is not a bad idea, if you can, to allow your hair to air-dry instead of breaking out the blow-dryer in the hot summer months.

Anyways, summer here in New England is way too short and when all else fails, the easiest way is to come to the salon and have your hair toned professionally. Toners control the unwanted pigment and add a ton of shine. It’s like lipgloss for your hair.
